Still Life - Light and shade

This is a 1 hour drawing of light and shadow using a 6B pencil. the focus of this drawing is to get the different shades of light and shadow, they is 2 different types of shadow which were cast on this drawing and you can see near the top that they is some form shadow which is less defined dark side on an object which is not facing the light source. These subtle shadows create an illusion of volume, mass and depth. But the dark bit at the bottom is a cast shadow which is made by the sheet blocking the light source, which is why it varies in different tone and value and looks lighter and softer and also less defined which becomes the edges. Also in this drawing you can see 2 different kinds of light, the very light areas which look like they have no shading at all are the highlighted light which is the lightest spot, or where the light hits the object exactly. Also the lightly shaded bit is the light middle tone which is basically where the light isn't hitting the object directly but its receiving some light value.

(The minuscule white line in the middle is due to having to scan 2 sides of an A3 sheet in a A4 scanner)

Contemporary interior architecture

This is a 1 hour drawing of contemporary interior architecture using 6B pencil. The focus point of this drawing is the composition but also working on modern architectural detail such as drawing non 90 degree angles. As you can see the roof which is held up by the pillars is slightly curved towards the left but then goes straight towards the right. Also they are very slight subtlety reflections of light across this drawing which can been seen in the water fountain area at the bottom of the drawing as its darker is some areas and lighter in other areas also you can see subtlety of lot in the pillars and the umbrellas. Also though these objects look simple but are quite complex in a lot of areas especially on the roof area where the roof goes behind the triangular shaped bit, as its hard to determine whether or not its straight or angled.

Classic interior achitecture

This is an 1 hour and 30 minute drawing of classic interior architecture using a 6B pencil. The focus of this drawing is a mixture of a couple of things which are the composition, lighting and texture of the objects within the drawing. This drawing shows some good composition in the door arch and the corridor beyond that arch. Also this drawing shows some good lighting in certain parts such as beyond the arch as you can see that the floor is darker which shows that corridor is darker then the rest of the area, and also the wall as you can see that the corners inside the arch bit are darker showing shadow but also outlining the corners and the wall bit is slightly shaded showing that light is hitting the surface of the wall. Also the texture used in this drawing shows that the skirting boards, the door, door frame and the wood around the walls are painted a darker colour to the rest of the drawing making them stand out to the rest of the drawing.

Still Life - Fruit

This is a 1 hour drawing of three different fruits using a 4B pencil. The focus of this drawing is using contour lines to show the form of each fruit, and these fruits show that they use simple lines to show form. Each of the fruits show that they are 3D shapes in different areas, the pineapple shows 3D in the leaf bit at the top as it has leafs other lapping each other and that they don't all face the same direction. The orange shows its 3D from the contour lines at the top where it was picked from a tree, and the curved lines are going around the back and side of the orange, and last the pear shows its 3D from its shaping as the shading lines curve around the pear making it look 3D as well as the shadow at the bottom which also adds a small aspect of 3D form on a 2D plain.

Figure Drawing - Basic human Anatomy

This is a 30 minute figure drawing using a conte crayon. The focus of this drawing is the composition and gesture in a static pose in this case laying side ways. The composition in this drawing is good as the body is well proportioned with the head and that you can tell the legs are bent or straight making drawing look 3D as well as good composition. Also the gesture of this drawing is captured very well and mapped out of the page well. The black background and the shading of this drawing make the drawing look 3D and you can tell where the light is hitting the body, and the black background helps show where the light hits the body strongest giving this drawing a dynamic look.

Figure Drawing - Foreshortening

These 2 drawings are both 10 minute foreshortening drawings using a 4B graphite stick. The focus of these images is the foreshortening and oblique angles, which can been shown in this image. Because of foreshortening both drawings look compressed from the viewpoint and the effect of perspective causes distortion. Which is why these drawings have lightly drawn three-dimensional boxes around the skeletons which helps capture the 3D information to be drawn on a 2D plain. One good example as to why these are good foreshortening drawings is the fact that parts of the drawings get smaller as the distance increases from the observer.

Still Life

This is 30 minute still life drawing of reflective surfaces using a 4B pencil. The focus point of this drawing is the metal vase in the middle as this has 2 objects reflecting off of it which changes its shading in certain parts. Also getting the composition is good as all the objects are the right size and its mapped out on the page very well.

This drawing is isn't perfect but it does show that the objects do have some form reflection but some are more reflective than others, but this drawing allows the eye to wander around the picture from the top of the small jug up to the standing vase along and down to the thin vase and along the side of the laid down vase. If this drawing was going to be drawn again the only thing which would need doing would be to add a shadow to the bottom of the drawing so that it doesn't look like its floating in shape.

Figure Drawing Anatomy - Feet

This is a 1 hour drawing of a human foot using a 6B pencil. The focus of this drawing is the composition and getting the detail in the complexity of the foot, and this is shown in both angles of the foot from the sizes in toes, the shape and the light and shadow in the foot. The drawing on the left shows good composition in the toes, where as the the drawing on the right shows shows good composition at the back of the foot and how it curves inwards from the back of the foot to the big toe, and also the shape of the ankle balls.

Figure Drawing Anatomy - Light and shadow

This is a 15 minute drawing using red and orange soft pastels on a sheet of purple sugar paper. The focus of this drawing is the light and shadow on the body which is created by a spot light hitting the body, and in this case the light is hitting the back of the body. Theses 2 contrimental strongly show the light (orange) and shadow (red) in some detail.

This drawing isn't a detailed drawing but it shows different shades of shadow and different brightness of light, and even though the light isn't hitting the front of the body, some light is visible at the front which hints that the skin of the human body has some very slight reflection properties or the light was reflecting off the wall and back to the front of the body.

Figure Drawing Anatomy - Non Human Anatomy - Yak

This is a 1 hour drawing of a taxidermied yak, drawn in the Leeds city museum, using a 6B graphite stick. The focus of this drawing was the head of this animal as it has very interesting features such as its horns. The composition is good especially in the head as this animal is very big with a massive skull, so making sure the neck is the right thickness is also good composition as the sternocephalic, brachiocephalic and omotransverse muscles would have to be big in order for this animal to carry the weight of its head and horns.

This drawing isn't perfect, but this drawing shows good composition throughout the drawing and it allows the eyes of the viewer to wander around the drawing from the head onto the hump on the back and along its back to the feet then around back to the head. Also from the direction of the drawn lines it shows that the drawing isn't a flat drawing making it look 3D, and adding depth to the drawing.
